Frequently asked questions

Everything about playing Aether Tail, the boards, ads and purchases, parental controls and play time.

Playing

How do I play Aether Tail?

Steer the snake to the pellets. Each one you eat scores points and makes you longer. Swipe in the direction you want to go, tap the side of the head you want to turn towards, or use the arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard. Each game, and a revive, starts with a tap on the board. The game ends when the head hits a wall or your own body.

What are the boards?

Six are on the home screen:

  • Classic: Eat, grow longer, and never hit a wall or your own tail.
  • Elastic: Free 360° movement with momentum. Sharp turns whip and stretch the body.
  • Chroma: Cross the colored zones to mix pigments. Only a matching mix can eat a pellet.
  • Constellation: Every 5 pellets your tail sheds a gravity node. Weave through the threads between them.
  • Resonance: The board pulses to a beat. Eat on the pulse to build a combo, and play the scale as you move.
  • Fusion: Elastic, chroma, constellation and resonance in one board.

Classic moves cell by cell on a grid. The others move freely in any direction. How each board works.

Is there a hidden board?

Yes. Keep exploring and it will find you. Settings → About → The boards says when one is still hidden.

How do stars work?

Every game ends with up to three stars: three from a score of 400, two from 150, otherwise one. Your best score is kept for each board, and a new best gets a chime and confetti.

What is a revive?

Once per game, after a crash, you can carry on with the same score and length. The snake is turned somewhere safe and waits for your next move. A revive plays a short ad you choose to watch, unless you've removed ads, which makes it free. If no ad is available, you get the revive anyway.

What is Easy mode?

Easy mode, in Settings → Gameplay, makes the snake 22% slower on every board.

Ads and purchases

How often do ads show?

An ad may show when you leave the celebration after a game, but never after your first game since opening the app, at most once every 2 games, and never within 2 minutes of the last ad. Nothing interrupts a game: the only ads during play are ones you choose to watch for a revive.

How do I unlock boards and colors?

Classic and the Aether colors are always free. Every other board and color theme unlocks for good after one short ad you choose to watch. Dark mode is never locked, and anything you find through a secret is free. Remove ads unlocks everything at once.

How do I remove ads?

Buy Remove ads, a one-time purchase, in Settings → Ads, from the link after a game, or in any ad dialog. Ads stop straight away, every board and color unlocks, and revives become free.

I got a new phone. How do I get Remove ads back?

Open Settings → Ads and tap Restore purchases, signed in to the same Apple Account or Google account you bought it with.

Does Remove ads carry over between iPhone and Android?

No. Purchases belong to the store you bought from, so a purchase made on the App Store can't be restored on Google Play, or the other way round.

Are the ads suitable for younger players?

Yes. On first launch the app asks your phone for an age range. Players under 13, and anyone while parental controls are on, only get ads rated for general audiences, without personalization. Only a player the phone confirms is 18 or older is ever asked about ad tracking on iPhone.

Parents and play time

What do parental controls do?

Settings → Parents → Parental controls shows how long and how many games were played each day, and lets a parent choose what's allowed: sharing results, ads for revives, ads to unlock boards and colors, and Easy mode only. While they're on, buying, sharing, links and play-time changes ask a grown-up first. They turn on by themselves when the phone says the player is under 13 or a parent manages it. More about them.

Can I set a parent PIN?

Yes, in the Parental controls screen. Without a PIN, a simple question for grown-ups guards those settings. The PIN is stored on the phone only as a salted hash. Too many wrong tries lock it for a while.

What are break reminders and play limits?

Optional tools in Settings → Play time. A break reminder shows a friendly message after 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours of continuous play. A play limit of 1, 2 or 3 hours pauses the game for a break of 15 minutes, 30 minutes or 1 hour. Both are off by default.

Settings

Can I change the colors or use dark mode?

Yes. Settings → Appearance has six color themes, Aether, Celestial, Ember, Orchid, Folk and Autumn, and a dark mode switch. Two more themes are secrets.

Is Aether Tail friendly to color-blind players?

Yes. In every theme the three pigments differ in lightness as well as hue, and a pellet that needs two pigments wears both as a split ring. Settings → Gameplay → Numbers on dots also labels every pigment 1, 2 or 3, on the dots or just above them.

Can I turn off vibration or sound?

Yes. Settings → Gameplay has Haptics, Sound effects and a volume slider. The sounds mix with your music and stay quiet when your phone is set to silent.

Are there achievements?

Yes, 25 of them, from your first bite to secrets you'll have to find. If you're signed in to Game Center on iPhone or Google Play Games on Android, they show up there too. To keep them on your phone only, turn that off in Settings → Achievements.

Are there leaderboards?

Yes: your best score on each of the six boards, in Normal mode, and how many pellets you've eaten in all, on Game Center or Google Play Games. Easy mode games count for pellets only. The Achievements screen shows your own scores and opens the leaderboards. Other players see your score with your Game Center or Play Games nickname, so while parental controls are on, scores are only sent once a parent allows Leaderboards in Settings → Parents → Parental controls.

Privacy and support

Do I need an account? Is my progress backed up?

No account is needed. Your settings, best scores and unlocks are stored only on your phone, so deleting the app removes them. Achievements you've sent to Game Center or Google Play Games stay on that profile.

What data does Aether Tail collect?

We don't collect your name, email or contacts. Ads in the free version are served by Google AdMob, which may collect device information to show and measure ads. If you remove ads, no ads are requested at all. Your age range stays on your phone. Read the full privacy policy.
